---------- Jaroslav Hašek (Prague, 1883 – Lipnice nad Sázavou, 1923) was one of the greatest Czech writers of the twentieth century. A journalist, anarchist, tireless provocateur and author of thousands of humorous stories, he led an adventurous life that took him to the battlefields of the First World War and later to Russia, where he spent several years. He is best known for his unfinished novel "The Good Soldier Švejk", a masterpiece of anti-militarist satire and world literature. In his works, absurdity, irony and a taste for practical jokes expose, with irresistible humour, the obtuseness of bureaucracy, authority and social conventions.
